  • New ESP book from the Open University (UK)

‘Professional Communication Skills for Business Studies’ is for students of business studies who want to develop specialised reading and writing skills for business study purposes. On the course, students will study a range of business related material that has been especially designed to develop their knowledge and their reading and writing skills. Topics include areas of human resource management; finance and accounting; marketing and a number of business analysis methods. Some of the course materials are authentic texts from the business world, others have been adapted or designed for the course. Different styles of writing from business studies and business are introduced. Through examining successful examples of student writing and work-related documents, and reflecting on what makes these texts successful, they will learn to write case studies, essays and reports.
This is a practical skills development course with numerous activities aimed at practising reading and writing for business studies and business. The focus of the course is on written English. Online communication is an important component of the course, enabling students to discuss the materials, contribute writing for comment from other fellow students, and read and comment on their work, exchanging ideas and experience. Students can submit drafts of their work by email and receive feedback on their writing from the tutor. For each of the three major types of writing, there is an assignment in which to apply the skills and use the knowledge students develop during the course.

  • DELTA – modularised – to include EAP

One of the most popular ELT training frameworks for experienced ELT professionals has been amended. The traditional UCLES DELTA (which in the late 1990s replaced the RSA/Cambridge DTEFLA and the RSA/Cambridge DOTE) is now offered in a modularised format, and ESP/EAP forms part of the new framework. More information about the restructured modules, and the role of ESP/EAP, will be provided on this website at the earliest opportunity. ESP/EAP colleagues who wish to share the views on the debate whether such diplomas prepare trainees for ESP/EAP work are asked to consult an article the link for which is listed below:

  • New developments in English for Work / English for the Workplace

The need to have a certain level of proficiency in English in order to carry out professional duties is becoming a prominent issue in the UK. Very soon workers representing diverse professions (e.g. construction workers or football players) and for whom English is a foreign language will need to pass specific language tests. More information about such plans can be gleaned on:

A similar trend can be noticed in the US. Very soon female golfers will be ‘forced’ to learn English, as can be seen in the articles linked below:
