English for Specific Purposes: Diversity of Coverage

The purpose of the 2007 Pre-Conference Event for ESP SIG is to demonstrate and discuss the exceptionally diverse range of sub-areas that ESP covers, and how these sub-strands are delivered in further, adult, private and university sectors in English native-speaking countries, in countries where English is a lingua franca (and is used as a second language) and in countries where English is used as a foreign language. Given the multi-stranded nature of ESP, a number of talks will inevitably focus on materials design as well as teacher training. A number of distinguished ESP and EAP practitioners from across all the continents will present papers devoted to teaching ESP and EAP, be it to students or teachers.

The papers to be presented on 18th April 2007 during the ESP SIG PCE include:

Special ESP announcements will include updates on ESP projects at the British Council worldwide (Mark Crossey) and on new EAP books (Garnet Education: Chris Shakespeare and Olly Twist). We will do our best to ensure that the final selection of the approved papers is officially published for the benefit of all EAP and ESP practitioners worldwide.

ESP Day: 20 April 2007

This year was particularly successful for the ESP SIG since around 60 ESP/EAP/EOP proposals were submitted for the competitive process of final selection. Some of the talks feature on the ESP Day which reflects the best ESP/EAP practice from various educational sectors across all the continents. Some of the talks are also integrated into thematic symposia (e.g. there is one on Academic Writing which will be led by Ruth Breeze). The other talks have been integrated into the successive days of the Conference so that each and every day of this global event has a selection of stimulating and though-provoking ESP / EAP papers.

Here is the provisional program of the ESP Day (* subject to confirmation):

  • Anne Pallant (University of Reading, UK): ‘Academic Writing Skills: an Integrated Approach to Successful Acquisition’
  • Prof. Raman MEENAKSHI (Birla Institute of Technology and Science [BITS], India) ‘Activity-Based Approach for Teaching Scientific and Technical Writing in English’
  • Dr Abdulkarim AL-NUJAIDI & Phil DEXTER (GOTEVT & the British Council, Saudi Arabia) ‘Wants, Needs and Perceptions – ESP Teacher Training in Saudi Arabia’
  • Dr Duruoha SOTARIUS (Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Nigeria) ‘Teaching Reading Comprehension to Large Classes Using African Literature in English’
  • Ulke TURK (University of Tartu, Estonia) ‘Higher Level Learners and Vocabulary Acquisition’
  • Jin-ping Chang (PLA General Hospital, Beijing, China) ‘The Role of Teacher in Teaching English for Academic Purposes’

The ESP Day will also feature the Open Forum which will be hosted by Mark Krzanowski, Ruth Breeze and Aysha Iqbal Vishumohan. As ESP SIG Committee members they will lead this session which will be attended by existing members present and the conference and those IATEFL members who are interested in what the ESP offers and who may join the ESP SIG during or after the Conference. Finally, on the last day of the Conference, Ruth Breeze will also chair one ESP Symposium devoted specifically to Academic Writing.

We are grateful to all past, current and prospective colleagues and ESP SIG members who have been making continuous efforts to make our activity a success. This is reflected in steady growth from strength to strength across the world.

We are now preparing for the IATEFL Annual Conference in Cardiff (April 2009).

As usual, we are hoping to hold a Pre-Conference Event the subject of which will be ‘English for Work / English for the Workplace’ (*the budget for the event is subject for approval, and once we have permission to proceed, we shall provide more relevant information on this website).
